24th March, 2013
Peter Hitchens, mad as a hatter though he is, said this: “Even now, in a corner of every newspaper office in the country, a faint shadow is growing and gathering. In time, it will thicken, darken and resolve itself into the chilly, relentless figure of the censor.”

I got home from work yesterday atrfenoon and mowed the lawn and blew leaves before the rain came today. After I mowed my lawn, I went next door to my neighbors house and mowed his lawn and blew the leaves off his property. I slipped a pay it forward card under his door mat when I was finished. He came over and thanked me for what I’d done, and also asked me about pay it forward. I often do things for other people, but yesterday it felt a little different because it gave me the opportunity to tell him about paying it forward; also in hopes that it would have a chain reaction and many lives would be effected by such a positive and simple notion of paying it forward .

Censorship is pish. It is absolutely unneccessary and, morewith, it increases the chances that nutcases stay undercover. I’m all for no censorhip, let all the silly seas print whatever they want, let the Neo-Nazis be Neo-Nazis, let the racists be racists. Even, if you will, let the Garys be Garys and the Jimmys be Jimmys – that way, you’ll catch the bastards quicker.
That said, censorship is important in certain aspects to keep the young ‘uns protected. I would suggest a global system of registration, whereby everyone registers with their date of birth and details, allowing them free access to everything if they are old enough but restricting them if not. The details would be kept in a central databank and you could see where everyone is going/doing. Each website would then be classified and if you are not legible, you do not get access.
Big plus, the Americans don’t then need to surf your hard drive or e-mails to find up what you’re up to… oh, hang on, I’m too late. Prism.
Loving the tourdate commentary as usual. Amongst my favourites so far are the Ayr Burns Festival, “Robert’s always with us, just not always comprehensible.”, the Harrogate at the Royal Hall, “the harrowing of the north”, the London Union Chapel, “come along to the church of pain” and the Cambridge Junction 2, quite simply “alone as a bastard” LOL!!! You do make me laugh my darling xxxxx
But sadly they are all UK venues and I will rely on youtube footage to capture the parades….looking forward to the upcoming release. Perhaps also some more updated travel tales, I do love a good laugh….
Justin, by any chance do you give free breast exams? Here in America, Obama’s healthcare plan does not kick in until next year, so I cannot afford to get gynecological exams or breast exams on a regular basis. Wish I could move to Scotland…
Maybe Iggy Pop won’t wear a top because he might be thinking if you’ve got it flaunt it. Unfortunately he ain’t got it so he really should cover up. Imagine if Justin, Iggy and Johnny Rotten lived together, perish the thought. Having said that I think it would make a great reality tv show, I’d certainly tune in.
I’ll have a coffee with my biscuit thanks Justin, white with no sugar. I can then sit and relax while reading a book I purchased recently, you may have heard of it, it’s called ‘My Life Is Good’. Hope you’ve got your frilly cooking apron on. There’s an image I’d like to see!!
Hi! I’m working on a novel with Marshall Fields in Chicago as a bkadcrop in fact, I’m writing you from the Starbucks at the Macys now. I’m looking for memories of the store from the 1960s. Can you help? I was trying to find out of Marshall Fields had a credit card by 1968 and it led me to you and yelp.
The Kim Jong Un Gingerbread man….cinnamon cyanide flavoured.
Looks like the guy who did Gangnam Style. Make biccies, not war.
He does a bit. Mr. Kim will need that cyanide biccie soon if he doesn’t cut the shit.
Has anyone read Justin’s latest tweets? I don’t know if it’s true or not but maybe he has taken the plunge and got married, but then I thought it might be an April Fool’s hoax. If it’s true then I guess congratulations are in order.
Wow what a year it’s been for him, the new book, new album and wedding(?). What’s next? Maybe the pitter patter of tiny feet!!!! Come on Justin you can do it, kids aren’t that bad (you’ll need them to look after you when you are old).
Thank you Kim. We were married yesterday in a small Ugandan nose piercing ceremony. The nasal nuptials were performed by a large, loin-clothed man, afflicted with a rather devestating deviated septum due to the size of his own proboscis protuberance.
But that’s what happens to nosy people.
The fact is that no one is actually allowed to say what they truly want to in public anymore for fear of offending some group or another. What a bunch of idiots humans have become. In pretending that we should all be the same, we have lost the very things that make us interesting.
They might as well censor it all. Even if they were to only censor the untruths there’d be little left in a newspaper in any case. Pity they wouldn’t censor lies about flu pandemics and so on. All these lies designed to sell products. The only thing worth reading in a newspaper these days is /are the comments from irate people. Nothing like a display of temper to lift the spirits. A reminder that, in fact, some people are actually alive out there and haven’t become completely brain dead.
I used to have a sticker on my car that said ‘The more time I spend with humans the more I love my cat’. I used to get little old ladies coming up to me saying how much they agreed with that. Happy Easter Justin. Hope you are indulging on hot x buns and chocolate. I know I am.
I saw a brilliant bumper sticker on a car today that read ‘Give A Flying Flock. Ban Duck Shooting Season. Big Guns =Small Dicks’. Kudos to whoever came up with that. I’d proudly display that on my car.
I once saw a bumper sticker that said ‘BOLLOCKS’. Made me laugh til I cried!
I have a bumper sticker that says “musicians duet better”! ;-)
Alorazaam-infakmation found, problem solved, thanks!
On October 3, thirty high scohol students from Mount Si’s Key Club visited the homes of two elderly folks in North Bend. Armed with gloves, garden tools, and determination ..they set out to offer assistance to these homeowners where the labor had simply become too big an obstacle. The students split and stacked firewood, trimmed overgrown bushes and hedges, brought garden beds back to objects of beauty, raked leaves, and filled an enormous trailer with discarded and rotting lumber that was taken to the dump. The best part of this endeavor was the smiles and hugs given by the homeowners to these high scohol Key Clubbers. That so many showed up at their homes to Pay it Forward was overwhelming and one of the most heart-warming experiences I have seen. Way to go Mount Si Key Club!
Could you please direct me (actually “Mrs. Jones”) to a site that clarifies the current status of the Andre Norton estate. “Mrs. Jones” is a life long reader of Andre Norton and cannot be sure what some of the (apparently) new books being offered really are….. considering some of the barely disguised ghost-written one in the past.Thanks.
This post is very sad…..I love you so much Rose, I wish I could do soemthing to help you. I am also watching and praying for a new brother or sister for Jude, and healing for your family. I love you so so so so much….I’m coming for a visit today, hope I can help cheer up little Jude. All of my love to you…xoxoxoxo
The trouble is that once news became so available on the internet local newspapers couldn’t compete and let all their reporters go. Those who were left regurgitated rather than investigated.
For the masses seen as the lowest common denominator……….. here is the news: The clouds will be fluffy, and all the bad things happen miles away.
Censor it if you like, it makes no difference in the end.
Now back to the studio where we a story about the troops in our region trying to end the scandal of walking down the street and not being patted on the back by one of the passers-by one time and being given free stuff. Shocking for our brave boys.
The older I get the more I’m for freedom of speech. Having said that though there has to be a time and a place for it and I think censorship is a good thing. It frightens me to think what children are exposed to these days as everything is readily available at the click of a button, no wonder they grow up fast. Back when I was growing up everybody thought how raunchy Madonna was but she was tame compared to what is shown now. It saddens me to think what the world will be like in 100 years, somehow I think the planet will be a very sad place. Justin, if you decide to do another music video I hope you won’t be gyrating around with minimal clothing on. Hang on a minute who am I kidding, GO FOR IT!!!!!!!! There I’ve said my piece.
Total freedom of speech is the ideal of any self proclaimed free society. Yet I can’t help but see situations where it is simply folly to imagine that we are indeed truly free. Self censorship or diplomacy? Synonymous terms. E.g., some people will say things on the internet that they would never say to someone’s face lest they risk their own face being smashed in. It’s just part of the wonderful violent hominid culture we call humanity.
The FBI used to investigate you and hold a file on you if they considered you an “undesirable”. Now they can just look you up on Facebook and Twitter. Sure you have freedom of speech. As long as you don’t say the wrong thing.
It shouldn’t be but there it is.
Like Lennon said “you think you’re so clever and classless and free but you’re still fucking peasants as far as I can see”.
Stepping down from my soapbox now…I agree with Mr. Hitchens.
Bit dramatic! Maybe the shadow growing is merely that of a fat arse…formed from doing fuck all! No wonder it’s relentless.
I must admit I censor myself all the time. If I didn’t I would fear for my safety. How free am I?
